Jenny Marra Demands Action on Air Quality

26 January 2018

Reacting to the news that Dundee has two of the most polluted streets in Scotland, Jenny Marra MSP has lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament demanding urgent action be taken.

The Seagate and Lochee Road are suffering from very poor air quality and there has been no improvement.

She said:

“The recent study by Friends of the Earth Scotland is very worrying.

“Air pollution has been a problem for years on both Lochee Road and the Seagate.

“ Air pollution presents a real threat to the health of those living and working in the area and I’m calling on Dundee City Council and the bus companies to start addressing the issue urgently.

“I have written to both Xplore Dundee and Stagecoach today asking for a meeting.

“I’ll be looking for information on what they are doing to lower the pollution caused by their busses, especially on the worst affected areas.

“Too many of the buses in Dundee are old.

“I want to hear from the companies what they are doing to update their bus fleet so dangerous emissions can be reduced and how the age and emission levels of our busses compare with other cities in Scotland”

Scottish Parliament Motion Lodged by Jenny Marra :

Title: Air Pollution in Dundee

Motion Text:

That the Parliament notes with concern the recent study conducted by the campaign group, Friends of the Earth Scotland, on air pollution levels; understands that the study shows that Dundee’s Lochee Road and Seagate are among the most polluted streets in Scotland; considers that this study indicates no real progress has been made with regard to emission levels on those streets; believes that urgent action is needed to improve the air quality in these areas as there is a clear risk to public health, and calls on Dundee City Council and the bus companies to take action as a matter of urgency.
